Dom Dolla & Go Freek – Define

Yesterday I had one of those unforgettable LA nights I keep hearing about. We danced our asses off to Hayden James, were surprised by a special guest set by SNBRN and Hotel Garuda, and even got to meet SNBRN as we left Sound’s artsy backyard lounge to catch our Uber. Yet despite all this, the night’s major takeaway still has to be Define. Released a mere 3 days ago, Dom Dolla & Go Freek’s thick deep house track is downright addicting. Melbourne’s Dom Dolla, a rising heavyweight in the Australian circuit and recent EDC vet, joined his buddies Go Freek from Sydney to drop what is already being deemed one of the biggest deep house anthems of the year. Per Dom Dolla’s bio, Define will undeniably join his repertoire of “currency accepted on all dance floors”.

AlunaGeorge – Supernatural (Klaves Remix)

More Rhodes! AlunaGeorge is out with a new remix compilation for Supernatural, and the last track on the list is a bouncy funk house cut from Poland’s Klaves. Island Records won’t let him post the entire mix on SoundCloud because of copyright contract, but this snippet is enough to get you hooked and give the full song a listen on Spotify.

Jack Ü – Take Ü There ft. Kiesza (Tchami Remix)

The Take Ü There official remix album is out, and while I didn’t care for the original much at all, there are a few good creative spins to be heard: future bass from Zeds Dead, drum & bass from Netsky, and our favorite, grime house from Tchami. Trying out a different flavor, the French DJ abandons his usual gritty stab synths for some aggressive filter-play alone. But while the hook keeps you listening with a familiar and catchy flow, it soon becomes painfully obvious that the rest of the remix is just a feeble attempt to support it and fill the time. It feels like Tchami did the bare minimum on everything but the hook: Simple breakdown chords? Check. Copy/paste acapella? Check. Predictable snare build? Check. That said, I love the hook so much that I thought it was worth sharing, and also because I can see it being spliced into a DJ set to great effect.

LP Spotlight: Flight Facilities – Down To Earth

With a spotless reputation for churning out some of the best electronic singles we’ve heard in the past few years, Sydney duo Hugo Gruzman and James Lyell finally have lift off with their debut full length. Avoiding the temptation to assemble a premature greatest hits album, they’ve taken a stab at a cohesive piece of work, picking four of their eight previously released singles. Down To Earth features a host of talented fellow Australian musicians while crisscrossing with quick flights from genre to genre, decade to decade. While at times the layovers feel contrived between tracks that are not all instant classics, Hugo and James have managed to produce an enjoyable journey that serves Flight Facilities well enough as a premier LP.

KAASI – Lisse

KAASI celebrated a birthday this past week with the release of Lisse. Like his other lounge-house work, it’s deep and luxe but still minimal in a way that seems to beg your attention for the smaller details that may not pop out until the second or third listen. KAASI said himself that he’s a strong believer in “less is more” — Lisse is another great example of that truth.
